What Are the Best Gluten Free Sandwich Cookies?
Gluten free sandwich cookies (Who am I kidding? We call them all Oreos) can be expensive. Who wants to spend a bunch of money and be disappointed? That’s why we tested many different brands to find the best of the best gluten free sandwich cookies. AKA Oreos.
Sadly, there were 3 brands that did not make the cut. They were Kroger’s Simple Truth Gluten Free Chocolate Flavored Sandwich Cookies, Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Joe-Joe’s, and Walmart’s Great Value Gluten-free Chocolate Crème Sandwich Cookies. The Kroger’s and Trader Joe’s brands contain carrageenan, and the Walmart brand contains hydrogenated oil.
This isn’t a medical site and I’m not a doctor, so all I’m going to say is many scientific studies have some not-so-nice things to say about carrageenan and the trans fats in hydrogenated oils, so I don’t review or recommend foods that contain them.

Testing the Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
Chocolate sandwich cookies are the most common variety of sandwich cookie. This doesn’t mean they are chocolate all the the way through. Chocolate sandwich cookies have two chocolate cookies and vanilla creme in the middle, like a traditional Oreo cookie.
While other flavors of sandwich cookies are more commonly used just for snacking, chocolate sandwich cookies are more versatile.
I take my testing responsibilities very seriously. That is why I did not limit myself to simply biting into these scrumptious cookies. Oh no no no, dear friends, for Oreos/chocolate sandwich cookies are not just for biting but for dunking and baking as well!
The four finalists are:
- Glutino Chocolate Vanilla Creme Cookies
- Goodie Girl Chocolate Vanilla Crème Cookies
- KinniTOOS Chocolate Sandwich Creme Cookies
- Oreo Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
(If you want to see the details about a particular cookie, click above to jump to its section)
These reviews are 100% my own opinion. I was not given any of these cookies – I personally drove to multiple stores and placed multiple online orders to get everything, and all cookies were paid for by me.
The Dunk Test
If you can swing it, I highly recommend getting a gig where you can dunk sandwich cookies in milk and say you’re doing it for work.
That being said, I was impressed with all four of the contenders here. All four maintained their integrity even after 3 or 4 dunks, soaking up enough milk to be extra tasty without falling off into the glass.
The Baking Test
I love an Oreo crust. Put it under a chocolate chip cheesecake and I’m in heaven. So of course I had to make some cute little mini cheesecakes with each of these four cookies and see how they did.
Once again, all four cookies did well. All four crusts were tasty and held together without crumbling apart. There were some slight differences that may influence your decision:
- The Glutino cookies have the highest cream to cookie ratio (all of these are regular versions, no double stuf or extra cream), so the crust doesn’t need as much butter to hold it together. That being said, it is a little sweeter (and also would be higher in calories, fat, and sugar – see below for more details)
- The KinniTOOS are the thickest of the cookies, so if you use them go by weight and/or volume and not number of cookies. In other words, if the recipe says it needs “_____ cups or ____ cookies”, then go by the cups. Going by the number of cookies will make your crust too thick. (I found this out firsthand when I used 3 cookies in each of the mini cheesecakes)
- If you don’t have a food processor and are crumbling these cookies by hand and/or rolling pin, go for the Oreos or the KinniTOOS. Both of them could be easily crushed just using a fork and a bowl. The other two were harder to manually break up.
Details of the 4 Best Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
{IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)
1. Glutino Chocolate Vanilla Creme Cookies
Price: $4.29 for 10.5 oz/18 cookies ($0.41 per ounce/$0.24 per cookie)
Nutrition per Cookie: 80 cal, 3.5 g fat, 1.5 g saturated fat, 33 mg sodium, 8.5 g sugar
Allergen Info: Contains soy. Free from gluten. Appears to be free from additional allergens, but it is not specifically labeled as such.
My Impressions:
The Glutino cookies have more “stuffing” in them than the others – so much so that they reminded me of Double Stuf Oreos. If you’re looking at the comparison picture above, you can see that the cream is just a little thicker, but I don’t think that’s where the “double stuf feeling” comes from.
Unlike the other 3 chocolate sandwich cookies that I tested, Glutinos have 9 little holes in both the top and bottom cookies which allows more cream to flow in.
Before I tried them (in October 2021), I saw a lot of negative reviews on the Glutino website for people getting brick hard cookies. I don’t know what happened there, but the package I got was great. All of them were just the right combo of soft and crunch, like a sandwich cookie should have.
PROS: Great taste, lots of cream – almost like a Double Stuf Oreo.
CONS: This cookie has the most calories, fat, and sugar of the four.
You can get Glutino products HERE.
2. Goodie Girl Chocolate Crème Sandwich Cookies
Price: $4.99 for 10.6 oz/24 cookies ($0.47 per ounce/$0.21 per cookie)
Nutrition per Cookie: 55 cal, 2 g fat, 1 g saturated fat, 42 mg sodium, 4.5 g sugar
Allergen Info: Contains soy. Free from gluten, peanut, dairy, egg. Kosher. Produced in a facility that uses tree nuts.
My Impressions:
These cookies were very close in taste and texture to the Gluten Free Oreo – I’d be hard pressed to tell them apart. It dunks well, and you can separate and lick it and enjoy it if you feel like being 7 again. It’s just an all around solid chocolate sandwich cookie.
The nutritional values are very close to the Gluten Free Oreos, too. Honestly, I think if I was at the grocery store I’d make the choice between the two of them based on price and availability (more on that below).
PROS: This is a solid, yummy, all around great cookie.
CONS: When shopping for this post, these were the hardest for me to find. I had difficulty getting them online so I had to track them down in person. Strangely, I found the other flavors of Goodie Girl sandwich cookie like S’mores and Birthday Cake in several different local stores, but the closest store that sold original Chocolate Crème was over 30 miles away. Seriously.
You can get info on Goodie Girl cookies HERE.
3. KinniTOOs Chocolate Sandwich Creme Cookies (made by Kinnikinnick)
Price: $3.99 for 8 oz/18 cookies ($0.50 per ounce/$0.22 per cookie)
Nutrition per Cookie: 60 cal, 2.3 g fat, 1 g saturated fat, 37 mg sodium, 4.7 g sugar
Allergen Info: Vegan. Free from gluten, soy, nuts, dairy, and peanuts.
My Impressions:
The KinniTOOS are a very nice sandwich cookie. The flavor’s great, but there’s a difference that you should be aware of.
As you can see in the comparison picture above, they are taller than the other cookies (quite a bit taller than the Oreos). As the cookie part is thicker, it gives it more of a crumbly texture when you bite into it and less of the “snap” that the Oreo has.
This definitely just comes down to personal preference. If you’re someone who likes to separate and lick their chocolate sandwich cookies, this cream tasted the sweetest to me.
PROS: This is the ONLY chocolate sandwich cookie here that’s free from soy. It’s also the only one specifically labeled as vegan.
CONS: It’s more crumbly and the cream is less prominent than the other cookies.
You can get Kinnikinnick cookies and other goodies HERE.
4. Oreo Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
Price: $4.29 for 13.29 oz/33 cookies ($0.32 cents per ounce/$0.13 per cookie)
Nutrition per Cookie: 53 cal, 2.3 g fat, 0.7g saturated fat, 43 mg sodium, 4.7 g sugar
Allergen Info: Contains soy; Free from gluten. Appears to be free from additional allergens, but it is not specifically labeled as such.
My Impressions: Oreo waited a long time before they released a gluten free version. I mean a loooooooong time. I always wondered about it – they had 9 million other flavors, but no gluten free? I think it was just because they didn’t want to disappoint people who would inevitably compare it to their originals. Well, they didn’t disappoint, because they’re pretty near identical as far as I can tell.
PROS: They taste pretty much identical to regular Oreos, and they’re far and away the cheapest per ounce and per cookie.
CONS: As you can see in the picture above, the cream is a little thin relative to the others (I suspect so you’ll be tempted to step up to the Double Stuf Gluten Free Oreos :-).
You can get Oreos HERE.
3 More of the Best Gluten Free Sandwich Cookies
Fortunately for gluten free lovers of tasty sandwich cookies, chocolate isn’t the only flavor option out there.
If it’s your first time looking into gluten free sandwich cookies, you might be surprised at the flavors you find. You’d probably expect vanilla, which is definitely out there, but there’s even more.
Some of these I’ll admit sounded a little odd to me at first, and I might not have tried them if I wasn’t writing this blog post. Which would’ve been a shame, because they’re definitely worth a look, er, taste.
Best Vanilla Gluten Free Sandwich Cookies
Several companies make vanilla gluten free sandwich cookies, but my choice for the best cookie in this category is Glutino Vanilla Creme Cookies.
NOTE: While I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of these cookies (and especially love them dunked in milk), some other taste-testers in my family weren’t as impressed. One person in particular said they were too sweet for them.
It’s kind of like the difference between milk chocolate and white chocolate. Without the cocoa there, the sugar in the white chocolate definitely stands out more. Again, I really loved these cookies, but if you like your cookies less sweet these might not be the best choice for you.
Best Unusual Flavors of Gluten Free Sandwich Cookie
Many of the gluten free manufacturers out there will make the expected flavors of items but then also venture out into more interesting flavors, too.
And thank goodness they do, because it gives us a lot of variety to choose from. Honestly, sometimes I’ll see flavors that are only available in the gluten free variety. In your face, gluten-ful cookie people! 😉
For the more “off the beaten path” or unusual sandwich cookie varieties, here are my favoites:
Goodie Girl S’Mores Sandwich Cookies
I was skeptical about this flavor when I first saw it. How could a sandwich cookie with creme taste like a homemade s’more?
Well, I’m glad I tried it, because these things are great. While it doesn’t match the gooey-ness of a hot marshmallow-filled treat (obviously), to me it definitely has that graham cracker plus chocolate plus marshmallow-y flavor that says “s’mores.”
While nothing can replace a real s’more, these cookies have a yummy flavor that sets them apart from your everyday chocolate sandwich cookies.
These cookies are certified gluten free and are also peanut, egg, and dairy free. They also have no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, or preservatives. They do contain soy.
KinniTOOs Cinna Bun Fun – Cinnamon Sandwich Crème Cookies
These cookies kind of blew me away, mostly because I honestly had very low expectations. A cinnamon bun cookie? That can’t possibly work, right?
Well, it works. They really do remind me of a cinnamon bun. While the texture is obviously far different than a gooey bun, the flavor is spot on.
There’s cinnamon, of course, but the creme is what seals the deal. It’s sweeter than standard vanilla creme and tastes just like the icing on a cinnamon bun.
Basically, if you like cinnamon buns and you also like sandwich cookies, you’ll probably like these, too.
The only problem I had was that I found them a bit addictive and was tempted to scarf them down instead of being reasonable and spreading them out.
One Last Bite
I had a lot of fun with this one. It’s sandwich cookies – what’s not to love?
I think all 7 of these are great options, which is good because I know how hard finding a specific brand can be from trying to track them all down.
Whenever I do these type of tests, I’m always grateful for how many options gluten free/celiac people have now. I enjoyed all 7 of these and would buy them again.
I hope this was helpful, and I hope you have a great day. Happy Snacking!
